Leipzig School Celebrates Louis Armstrong, “A Life for Jazz”

November 27, 2007 November 27 marked the opening of the State Department’s Louis Armstrong Poster Show at the 65th Secondary School in Leipzig-Mockau. Addressing 80 students, the school principal and an official from the Saxony Education Agency, Consul General Mark Scheland recalled Louis Armstrong as an American icon who became a part of world heritage, as well as the role of African-American performers in the civil rights movement. The students augmented the consulate-provided poster materials with GDR-era jazz memorabilia, including LP covers as well as ticket stub and newspaper article reproductions from Armstrong’s three concerts in Leipzig in 1965. After opening the exhibit, the Consul General conducted a Q&A session in which 8th to 10th graders tested their English.
