Thomas Nehls and Rik DeLisle
|
July 21, 2007 The U.S. Consulate Leipzig supported a panel discussion on the changing images of the U.S. and Germany at the Forum for Contemporary History in Leipzig (Zeitgeschichtliches Forum). The program highlighted the evolution of transatlantic perceptions since the 1960s. Participants Thomas Nehls, a former ARD radio correspondent to the U.S., and RIAS radio veteran Rik DeLisle, though both born the same year -- 1947 -- offered two distinct perspectives on the issue. Their perceptions were shaped by often contrasting personal experiences and values, which turned their discussion into a lively exchange on the various highlights and fault lines in U.S.-German relations. The discussion was part of an alumni homecoming weekend organized by the American Studies Alumni Association of the University of Leipzig and drew an audience of some 70 American Studies alumni, as well as members of the general public. Cultural Affairs Assistant Zoe Kusmierz, also an alumna of American Studies, spoke some words of welcome to the audience and panelists.
