Consul Participates in Sister City Signing - Deep Underground - in Sondershausen
January 29, 2008. Consul for Public Affairs Mark Wenig and Cultural Assistant Zoe Kusmierz attended a ceremony and reception in the northern Thuringian city of Sondershausen, marking the official signing of a sister city agreement between Sondershausen and Rolla, Missouri. Sondershausen Mayor Joachim Kreyer spoke first, discussing the history and the importance of the city’s relationship with Rolla, and more importantly, reminded listeners of the U.S. post war contribution to the peace, well being and present high standard of living in today’s Germany. Consul Wenig then delivered remarks and underlined Consulate’s support for sister city exchanges such as this one. The event was held some 860 meters (over 2400 ft) below ground in a festival hall located within a salt mine, which is now a local tourist attraction. Both Sondershausen and Rolla share a mining tradition. Sondershausen Mayor Joachim Kreyer
