Leipzig Toastmasters Salute Club Founder
July 8, 2008. The Leipzig Toastmasters Club, the only branch of this Englishspeaking club in the former East Germany, saluted the club’s founder, Mark Wenig, Consul for Public Affairs, at his last meeting. Wenig, who initiated the club in April 2007, along with Charles Whitmer, a Fulbright spouse at the time, had previous experience getting Toastmasters off the ground at two previous posts. Toastmasters is a non-profit organization which trains members in public speaking and general communication skills. Founded in the 1920s in southern California, it now has a worldwide presence with 226,000 members in 92 countries, including clubs in Berlin and many other cities in Germany.
