November 28, 2008. In an interview under the headline "The course was right" in Thüringer Allgemeine Zeitung on November 28, Ambassador William R. Timken Jr. took stock of his tenure in Germany, the Bush presidency, the recent elections and his engagement in eastern Germany. Ambassador Timken underscored the ongoing importance of German-American relations which is also reflected in the close economic ties between the two countries. He also mentioned that it had been important for him to visit the eastern German states to make up for the gap in relations with this part of Germany.
