July 13, 2007 Twenty upper-grade students from the Berufsbildende Schule in the Elbe River city of Torgau, Saxony, came with their English teacher Dr. Ursula Roscher to the consulate general for a round table with the Consul General, Information Resource Center (IRC) Assistant Mechthild Hoelker, and U.S. intern Amanda Paustian. Students’ questions, put in English, touched on the U.S. presidential election in 2008, missile defense technology in central Europe, Iraq, Iran, and U.S. policy and practices with respect to unemployment, the social safety net, and even combating obesity. The students got an introduction to IRC facilities and a first look inside a U.S. diplomatic post. Our visitors from Torgau and consulate staff enjoyed two cakes baked by students in the group. And, as a memento of the Consul General's February 2007 visit to their school, students presented a CD they had assembled with images from that day as well as a framed article from the local newspaper.
