July 24, 2007 Leipzig Consul General Mark Scheland traveled to the Harz region town of Ilsenburg to hear from German and American college students about their youth outreach focusing on overcoming intolerance and isolation from foreigners. The Saxony-Anhalt based NGO, "Miteinander e.V.," recruited students from U.S. and German universities to create four-person teams, for each of four rural cities in the state, and also in the neighboring state of Brandenburg. In each town, including Pömmelte, the scene in 2005 of a notorious attack on a 12-year-old boy of mixed race, the students are working with a community center to bring neighborhood youth into dialogue with people of non-German backgrounds. The Consul General acquainted program participants and Ilsenburg’s mayor with consulate activities in support of democratic principles and inter-cultural understanding.
