May 9, 2008. A full room of over 100 young scholars awaited the appearance of General Consul Mark Scheland, as he wrapped up a three-day orientation program in Jena for Germanywide recipients of Fulbright grants who are preparing to depart on their academic- and cultural exchange to the United States. Consul General Scheland lectured and took questions on the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign and candidates. He illustrated the intricacies of the U.S. electoral system, visually complementing the substance of his lecture with PowerPoint slides. The presentation prompted thoughtful questions, which opened dialogue centering on prospects for the 2008 presidential candidates and current political issues that will continue to shape German-American relations. In reply to a question, Consul General Scheland also outlined his diplomatic career experiences.
