September 4-6, 2009. The U.S. Consulate General Leipzig broke new ground with its first participation in the 18
th Tag der Sachsen, an annual event celebrating institutions and products from the state, which attracted 320,000 visitors to the town of Mittweida. For three days, Consulate staff manned a booth in front of the University of Applied Sciences Mittweida. Consul for Public Affairs Jim Seward presented a book collection (Best Children's Books 2008) to the Mittweida public library. The Consulate's participation was publicly praised at the opening ceremony by the president of the Saxony State Parliament Erich Iltgen and the lord mayor of Mittweida. On September 5, Consul General Katherine Brucker gave several interviews on the stage of the Saxony State Parliament (i.e. together with Martin Dulig, MdL and FY-2002 alumnus, and Michael Weichert, MdL, and Honorary Consul of Bosnia and Herzegovina). In addition she was featured on 99drei Radio Mittweida by the local university. In the evening Consul General Brucker was among the guests at a reception hosted by Minister President Stanislaw Tillich, also an International Visitor Program alumnus. In preparation for this big event, a display case at the Mittweida Public Library alerted customers to the newly established cooperation with the Consulate's Information Resource Center (IRC). Materials on display included the CD-Rom "About the USA", the full range of State Department products including Obama flyers and pictures, the Consulate's brochure for "Tag der Sachsen," bookmarks, USA flags, Map of the USA, link lists for in-depth research about the United States, information for teachers and more.
