About the Consulate

Public Affairs

Program Section
The Program Section of the Consulate General Leipzig organizes conferences, seminars, lectures, readings and roundtable discussions on issues important to the German-American relationship. Many of these events are co-sponsored by German Institutions. Current topics include transatlantic relations, U.S. foreign policy objectives and aspects of U.S. society.

Public Affairs program events provide a regular forum for expert-level dialogue among American and German government agencies, journalists, associations, trade unions, think tanks, universities, non-governmental organizations, and political parties.

Press Section and Media Services
As the public affairs arm of the U.S. Consulate, we inform the media about U.S. policies through a wide variety of services.

On the occasion of visits by high-level U.S. officials or delegations, Public Affairs organizes news conferences and support for the international press accompanying the U.S. government officials. Occasionally, exclusive interviews can be arranged for German media with these visiting U.S. officials. In coordination with our Washington offices, Public Affairs can also organize digital video and tele-conferences.

Several documents are published daily, ranging from press releases to inform the media of U.S. Embassy/Consulate and U.S. government activities to full texts of important official documents such as treaties, policy papers and speeches. Backgrounders and summaries of U.S. views on important policy issues are also made available to media institutions on a regular basis. The Washington File, a daily updated full text database of U.S. government documents, provides access to some of these texts. In addition, the Information Resource Center provides in-depth research assistance for media contacts.

The press section also cooperates closely with the U.S. Dept. of States Foreign Press Centers in Washington, D.C., New York and Los Angeles. The Foreign Press Centers support U.S. policies by helping foreign media cover the U.S. Their goal is to promote the depth, accuracy, and balance of foreign reporting from the U.S., by providing direct access to authoritative American information sources.

Information Resource Center
The Information Resource Center (IRC) provides access to comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date information on U.S society, foreign/security policy, economic affairs, political processes, and culture.
