Garrett delivers his first lecture as holder of the newly established Fulbright Leipzig University Distinguished Chair for American Studies - the only such chair in Germany aside from Frankfurt.

The band members visit the Mendelssohn museum to view an autograph of four pages of music by Mendelssohn that was purchased in part with proceeds from the concert.

Alvin "Youngblood" Hart -- Memphis based singer-guitarist, and 2003 Grammy nominee - lectures and performs in Dessau (December 8) and Eisenach (December 9). Mr. Hart meets in Dessau with students at the "Philanthropinum", a highschool founded in the 18th century, and discusses with them roots and trends in blues, his personal background and music.

Leipzig's Consul for Public Affairs Dr. Elizabeth Bonkowsky and the Consulate's two U.S. interns visit Johanngeorgenstadt on the southern border of Saxony. They spend a morning at the school for mentally challenged students who come from all parts of Germany. Dr. Bonkowsky also meets with the regional director of special schools, the mayor and the Landrat. The interns give presentations to three additional school groups.

Sister Act, an all-girls student drama group from Friedrich-Schiller-Gymnasium, stages "Harriet Tubman - Conductor on the Underground Railroad". After numerous successful performances of the play on African-American heroine Harriet Tubman during the past few months, "Sister Act" took the project to the next level and visited schools in the Washington and New York area, October 29 - November 14, 2003.

Ambassador Coats and his wife Marsha take part in a worship service, visit the newly renovated Luther House, and enjoy a medieval fair. Because of the recent release of the German-American film "Luther," interest in Wittenberg is particularly high this year.

The Leipzig - Houston Sister City Association organizes an evening to present the work and art of Eiko Grimberg, a graduate of photography at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. Grimberg's works reflect his interest in American culture in Germany and German culture in the U.S. Grimberg presents a slide show with photographs of former German communities in the Hill Country in Texas, which he visited in spring 2003.

The program includes a lecture on cultural differences 'Freedom Fries and Friedensbewegung (peace movement)' and a presentation on gateways to USA information on the Internet.

Ambassador Daniel R. Coats and Mrs. Coats visit Thuringia. They meet Minister President Dieter Althaus in Erfurt and the Lord Mayor of Weimar Dr. Volkhardt Germer, and have several media interviews. Mrs. Coats talks to highschool students at Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium, Erfurt, and Schiller-Gymnasium in Weimar. Ambassador Coats and his wife do a bible reading with Pastor Eggert at Weimar's public library.

The 46th International Leipzig Festival for Documentary Film takes place in Leipzig. Several American films among the 361 international contributions from 47 countries open another window into the world for eastern German and international audiences.

The US Consulate General Leipzig supports Leipzig Jazz Club which hosts its 27th international festival "Leipziger Jazztage". It is the most important forum for contemporary jazz and world music in the five new German states. The concerts take place in smaller clubs, as well as in Leipzig's Opera House, and feature newcomers as well as U.S. legends Ron Carter and Jimmy Smith.

Lord Mayor Bill Purcell from Magdeburg's sister city Nashville, TN, visits Magdeburg. Purcell attends the German Unity festivities for the entire weekend together with Leipzig Consul General Fletcher Burton (a Nashville native) and Lord Mayor Lutz Trümper. During his visit the city installs official partnership plates at Magdeburg's entrance roads.

This law enforcement conference is organized in cooperation with Landes-Polizeischule Sachsen and Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation.Sally Stoecker from Transnational Crime and Corruption Center and Anton Smith, U.S. Embassy Berlin, explain the global threat of human trafficking and money laundering, while German experts explore organized crime on a state, federal and global level.

Consul for Public Affairs Dr. Elizabeth Bonkowsky hosts three high school students from the Leipzig consular district, their parents and geography teachers to acknowledge their excellent showing in the 'National Geographic World Championship' in Tampa, FL, in July. At the German finals in Bremen the three students had beaten out all other German participants (one from each state) to be upstaged only by the U.S. in a tight world championship contest involving 19 countries.

Dr. Bonkowsky also meets with the Rector of the Zittau-Görlitz technical college, the new tri-country, three-languages-plus-English "Neisse University," which conducts classes in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Germany.

Consul for Public Affairs Dr. Elizabeth Bonkowsky attends the traditional outdoor fall concert of the Bergsteiger (mountain-climbers') men's choir in the area south of Dresden known as "Saxon Switzerland." The concert takes place in front of a backdrop of dramatic rock formations. 80 members of the choir will travel to the U.S. next month for performances at the Columbus, Ohio Oktoberfest and fall festival in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

The event is a joint program of Weimar's U.S. Veterans Friends Germany and the U.S. Consulate General Leipzig.

The event aims at generating money for the school's scholarship fund and increasing support for international schools in the district. Following the tournament Saxony Minister President Milbradt joins the Coats for a dinner party, which also will be attended by Leipzig Consul General Fletcher Burton.

Dr. Bonkowsky also attends the renaming of a street near the Consulate to "Straße des 17. Juni", and the unveiling of a model for a plaque and bronze tank tracks where the uprising was broken up 50 years ago.

Consul for Public Affairs Dr. Elizabeth Bonkowsky, opens a display of photos of New York City at the Dresden World Trade Center. The photographers were recipients of the Pall Mall foundation's grants to work in New York, awarded to some twenty young people from eastern Germany each year. Professionals chose 180 photos out of the snapshots submitted by the trainees for the display.

Farr Professor of American History and Culture at Cornell University, lectures to students at five universities in Saxony, Thuringia, and Saxony-Anhalt. The lectures in Leipzig and Dresden are on the social and political aspects of the transformation from popular culture to mass culture in 20th century America. In Jena, Magdeburg and Weimar, Kammen compares trends in European and American fine arts.
