October 24, 2008. The President of the Technical University Chemnitz, Prof. Klaus-Jürgen Matthes, and Dr. Jörg Feldkamp, Director of the Industrial Museum, opened an academic symposium dealing with various aspects of industrialization, industrial culture and de-industrialization. The event compared problems and solutions of the Pittsburgh region with Saxony and other places as well as depiction in literature. Organized by the American Studies Department of TU Chemnitz and supported by the Consulate General Leipzig, the symposium attracted about 130 scholars and students from all over Germany and was embedded in a big exhibit in the Industrial Museum.
