Discussion With German NCOs in Leipzig

April 3, 2008. Consul General Mark Scheland briefed Bundeswehr non-commissioned officers (NCOs) on the U.S. National Security Strategy, written in 2006. The 90-minute session, conducted in Leipzig's Contemporary History Forum, was scheduled in the course of the soldiers' two-week training at the Bundeswehr School in Delitzsch, Saxony. During the Q&A, participants were able to exchange ideas on a range of topics from Afghanistan and Iraq, where many of the soldiers present had served tours, to the U.S. presidential elections. An open and candid atmosphere generated discussion on the NATO Summit being held that week, and the admission to NATO of several Balkan states and possibly Georgia and Ukraine in the future.
