U.S. Consul General Opens Weinfest in Meissen
September 21, 2007. The Meissen “Weinfest” opened with a great international get-together that included delegations from four of Meissen’s sister cities, including Provo, Utah. Headed by their mayor, some 36 people from Provo journeyed to Meissen to rekindle a partnership that began 6 years ago. Following opening words by the mayor of Meissen, Consul General Mark Scheland addressed the public of Meissen and the Provo delegation, focusing on the great cultural tradition Meissen celebrates with its now well-known annual wine festival, and the shared sense of industriousness that the people of Meissen and Provo have exhibited in building their communities. The Weinfest in Meissen attracted about 50,000 visitors this year, and has become a major annual cultural event in the Dresden region.
