U.S. speaker Charles K. Mallory, Senior Adviser at the US Department of State’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, explained to students at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität of Jena recent developments in U.S. policies towards the Near Eastern States. Mallory analyzed changes in U.S. foreign policy and assistance towards Egypt since September 11, 2001, and put a special emphasis on the role of civil society in the Middle East. His audience was especially interested in the various U.S. reform initiatives
