Bill Purcell, the Lord Mayor of Nashville, TN, arrived for his final visit to Nashville’s sister city Magdeburg on August 16, and was received by representatives from politics, culture, and the media at the Otto-von-Guericke Association. Consul Edith Backman and staffers from Leipzig Consulate General attended the event and used the opportunity to meet the mayor and two representatives of the Nashville sister city association. The German-American Dialogue Center in Magdeburg had issued the invitation to honor Bill Purcell’s work for the partnership and in helping to develop the exceptionally strong ties between these two cities. In a special edition of the Volksstimme Magdeburg Mayor Purcell was featured on the front page and the newspaper was handed over by editor-in-chief Franz Kadell. The issue also highlighted the role of former Consul General Fletcher Burton, a native of Nashville, in fostering the relationship.
