November 1, 2007. Consul General Mark Scheland was one of several speakers who addressed at a “Re-opening Ceremony” held at the Leipzig International School (LIS). The event officially opened the school’s new 13.5 million Euro building and campus. Since opening in 1992, the school and the Consulate have enjoyed a close relationship, with a former Consul General, Todd Becker, playing an important role in the school’s founding. LIS has also received annual financial support from the United States Government for teaching materials and American staff expenses, as well as more recent significant support for security upgrades. Among his other comments in support of international education, Scheland also stressed that a high caliber international school was key to helping Leipzig attract international investment. This event was attended by several local leaders from both the public and private sectors, including Saxony Minister President Georg Milbradt.
