Explaining Independence Day
June 12, 2008. Bringing the "Meet US" program to a suburb of the small city of Gera, Consulate staffer Birgit Kaemmer and U.S. interns Sunshine Moore and Joe Semrad introduced a group of 15 high school students to the traditions of celebrating Independence Day. The students, who had never talked to a native English speaker before, enjoyed the encounter with the young Americans and their personal anecdotes about how they celebrate 4th of July with their families. In addition, the students inquired about possibilities of spending time in the U.S. as an au pair, camp counselor or social service volunteer.
