HipHop Hits Leipzig
June 7, 2008. The 6th annual HipHop Awareness Week, which was supported by Leipzig Consulate General, opened with a panel discussion on “Old School Histories” and continued with the “Battle of the East,” the most competitive break dancing contest in eastern Germany, drawing some 900 HipHop enthusiasts. The panel featured academics, a German HipHop activist, and Rebel Diaz, a HipHop trio from the Bronx, which promoted Hip Hop as tool in community work. Before an audience of about 30, the panel discussion stressed HipHop as a global culture, which adapts local music traditions. Organized by Steinhaus Bautzen and the Leipzig University’s student council, the HipHop Awareness Week is a unique venue linking academic perspectives with HipHop events.
