May 14, 2008. Leipzig Consul General Mark Scheland spoke to over 30 members and guests of the Rotary Club in Haldensleben, Saxony-Anhalt, representing a broad crosssection of professionals and entrepreneurs in the region. The Consul General's prepared remarks focused on the continuity of strategic goals in U.S. foreign policy over several decades. In reaction to the hosts' basic question - how U.S. policy would change under a new president - the Consul General drew on campaign statements and web site postings of the major candidates Clinton, McCain and Obama, treating issues of foreign and security policy, international trade, and energy and climate. The Consul General used the opportunity to explain U.S. efforts in the Major Economies process for global climate and energy policy, and he discussed both the immigration issue in the U.S. and Mission Germany support for Germany's integration dialogue.
