• This annual musical event has been taking place for more than 20 years and will run 17 days in May/June 2009 in Dresden, a city with a rich and long music history. The festival includes 39 concerts, dance, and orchestra performances covering all different types of music (classical, jazz and more).
• The festival was born in 1978 during the Cold War when Dresden invited several musical groups, including the New Yorker Philharmonic orchestra, to demonstrate openness. Dresden’s status as a city of great musical events has grown ever since, and especially since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 (whose 20th anniversary is also marked in 2009).
