Mendelson-Festtage August/September 2009 – Leipzig

• On occasion of the 200th birthday anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847) Leipzig will honor him as a great composer and music director of the Gewandhaus. He founded the first German conservatory and the annual Mendelssohn festivities remember him.
• In 2009 the Gewandhaus orchestra under direction of Riccardo Chailly und Kurt Masur, also the orchestra of Basel, the RIAS chamber choir and many more will turn Leipzig into a Mecca of classic music. The famous Beaux Arts Trio (a piano trio) will give its very last concert on this occasion.
• Different symposiums will be held under the direction of Prof. Dr. Christian Schmidt where famous international academics will highlight different parts of Mendelssohn’s life and work.
• Most of the events will take place between August 21st and September 18th, in cooperation with other groups that are hosting their own events. Among these the Thomaner choir, the Leipzig Bach Archive, the museum for music instruments at Leipzig University, the Schumann Haus and the Leipzig Thomas church.
