Händel Festival, Spring  2009 – Halle

• In Georg Friedrich Händel’s (1685-1759) birthplace, Halle an der Saale, the Händel festival will take place under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II and Federal Chancellor Horst Köhler. For more than 300 years Händel’s music has inspired people all over the world and Halle is celebrating its honorary citizen.
• Celebrations will begin in Halle on Händel’s birthday (February 23rd, 2009) and include concerts in the Händel-Haus, operas and cultural events throughout the city and the regional area.
• On the 250th anniversary of his death (April 19th 2009) a “Special Day” is planned with a broadcast of Händel’s music on 40 radio stations within the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Halle will open the day with a large concert from the Marktkirche (where Händel was baptized).
• Additional concerts, exhibitions and other events will offer visitors great experiences getting to know Händel and Halle during April 2009.
