Reading Of “The Gardner”

Consul General Mark Scheland and the students of Edouard-Manet Elementary School

June 9, 2008. Consul General Mark Scheland visited class 4a of the Edouard-Manet Elementary School for a reading of American author Sarah Stewart’s “The Gardener”; a favorite book of the Scheland family. Scheland and his German and American interns were instantly greeted by the class of 24 fourth-graders with a cheerful English “Good Morning!” The book, set in the time of the Great Depression, led to further discussions of American history and geography. Students were also given the opportunity to ask the Consul General questions about American life and his role as a diplomat.
