July 10, 2007 The 10th anniversary of the Frank Freidel Memorial Library, which is part of Leipzig’s university library, was commemorated with a reception. Having grown from generous donations by U.S. institutions and private scholars - the greatest share being the private library of the late Frank Freidel, a Harvard historian - the library now includes some 18,000 books and media on American literature, history, society and politics. During the ceremony, various speakers from the university’s Institute for American Studies highlighted the contribution of the Consulate General Leipzig, including the engagement of a U.S. library professional to lay the groundwork, and the continuous stream of book donations, such as that of U.S. publishers’ samples displayed at the 2007 Leipzig Book Fair. Consul for Public Affairs Mark Wenig and staffer Zoe Kusmierz addressed the audience on the importance of the project from the U.S. perspective.
