March 18, 2008. Author and Holocaust survivor Inge Auerbacher spoke to some 80 students and their teachers at Leipzig’s Lutheran School Center about her life story and what it meant to grow up as a Jewish girl during the Nazi time. The 6th graders, who listened intently and asked many thoughtful questions, had previously read Auerbacher’s book "I Am a Star" and prepared a short performance based on a poem from her book. Consulate General Leipzig staff attended the meeting and talked to the students and teachers. Auerbacher, who emigrated with her parents to the U.S. in 1946, conveyed to her young audience her dream that people of different religious backgrounds can live together as she does in Queens, New York, where her neighbors are Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, and Christian.
