The Anna Amalia Library in Weimar, one of Germany’s most famous cultural treasures which was destroyed by a devastating fire in 2004, officially re-opened its doors on October 24 amid widespread national attention. German Federal President Horst Koehler delivered the keynote address at the festive commemoration before 1200 prominent guests from all over Germany, who celebrated the library’s literal rise like phoenix from the ashes. Consul General Mark Scheland, as U.S. representative at the event, was briefly shown during the national broadcast. In his speech, Thuringian Minister President Dieter Althaus also mentioned the U.S. based Getty Foundation, as a donor to the library’s restoration.
