September 8-9, 2009. Consul General Katherine Brucker, Consul for Political and Economic Affairs Edie Backman, and an Information Resource Center (IRC) staffer joined forces for a consolidated outreach trip to meet mayors, U.S. businesses and library staff in five smaller towns - Genthin, Tangermünde, Stendal, Salzwedel and Gardelegen - in the rural Altmark area of Saxony-Anhalt north of Magdeburg. The mix of representative and brainstorming sessions as well as informational programs provided Consulate counterparts with an inside look into joint program opportunities, products and services. Activities included book donations in four public libraries, a Meet US event with 4th graders in Genthin and a teacher workshop in Gardelegen, all of which were well received and widely covered in the local media. A meeting at the Stendal campus of the Magdeburg/Stendal University of Applied Sciences opened new opportunities for cooperation.
