Teaming Up With U.S. Consulate Krakow to Visit Goerlitz
September 8-9, 2011. Consul General Mark J. Powell and Consul for Political and Economic Affairs Helena Schrader visited the City of Görlitz and Zgorzelec together with Consul General Allen Greenberg, Consular Officer Jonathan Koehler, and Consul for Political and Economic Affairs Marek Guzik of U.S. Consulate General Krakow. The purpose of the trip was to look at a wide-range of cross-border issues from labor shortages to joint security, scientific and cultural initiatives. The program included meetings with Zgorzelec Mayor Rafał Gronicz and Joachim Paulick, the Mayor of Görlitz. In addition to a briefing on trans-border police cooperation between Saxony and Poland and a discussion with German and Polish members of the local Chamber of Commerce and industry, participants visited the Europa School in Goerlitz. Particularly impressive was a tour of a clinic in Zgorzelec at which innovative treatment for the prevention and cure of severe sclerosis is being carried out by a multinational team of experts. School children from both Zgorzelec and Goerlitz are integrated into the program.
